Booking Tips

  • Book your tickets at least a few weeks in advance for peak season (June-August) as time slots sell out quickly.
  • Choose a combo ticket if you plan to visit other ancient sites like the Roman Agora or Hadrian's Library for the best value.
  • Verify that your guided tour includes the entrance fee – some do not.
  • Opt for a mobile ticket to avoid the need for printing and for easy access.

What to Bring

  • Comfortable walking shoes (essential)
  • Sunscreen
  • Hat and sunglasses
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Camera
  • Government-issued ID

Best Seasons to Visit

The best times to visit the Acropolis are during the shoulder seasons of spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October). The weather is comfortable for walking, and the crowds are smaller than in the peak summer months. Winter offers the fewest crowds but a higher chance of rain.

What to Wear

Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes with good grip as the marble paths are slippery and uneven.|Lightweight, breathable clothing is recommended, especially from May to September.|Consider layers in the spring and autumn as mornings can be cool.|A light jacket or shawl is useful for evening visits or cooler months.

Planning

Historical Context

The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient citadel located on a rocky outcrop above the city. It contains the remains of several ancient buildings of great architectural and historical significance, the most famous being the Parthenon. Pericles, in the fifth century BC, coordinated the construction of the site's most important present remains. It is the most striking and complete ancient Greek monumental complex still existing in our times and is a universal symbol of the classical spirit and civilization.

Photography Tips

  • The golden hour (first hour after sunrise and last hour before sunset) provides the best light for photos of the Parthenon.
  • Use a wide-angle lens to capture the scale of the monuments.
  • The view of the Parthenon from the Propylaea entrance is a classic shot.
  • For a clean shot of the Parthenon without crowds, try framing it from the eastern end of the site.

Insider Tips

  • Book the first time slot of the day to avoid the biggest crowds and the midday heat.
  • The south slope entrance is often less crowded than the main entrance.
  • Don't forget to walk over to Areopagus Hill (Mars Hill) nearby for a fantastic free view of the Acropolis and the city.
  • Download an audio guide app on your phone beforehand to save money and get context as you explore.
  • The ticket also grants access to the slopes, so don't miss the Theatre of Dionysus and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.

  • We are proud to connect you with top-rated Acropolis experiences offered by our trusted partners, including GetYourGuide, Viator, and other leading tour aggregators. Book with confidence knowing you're getting a quality-vetted experience.

Fun Facts

  • The word 'Acropolis' means 'high city' in Greek.
  • The Parthenon was built without using any mortar; the massive marble blocks were precisely cut to fit together perfectly.
  • The Caryatids, the female figures supporting the Erechtheion, are replicas. Five of the originals are in the Acropolis Museum, and one is in the British Museum in London.

Absolutely Essential to Book Ahead!

Do not make the mistake of showing up without a ticket. We walked past a queue that was hundreds of people long. Our skip-the-line mobile ticket worked perfectly. The site itself is breathtaking, more incredible than any photo. Worth every cent.

Awe-inspiring piece of history

Visiting the Acropolis was the highlight of our Athens trip. The sense of history is palpable. We chose a guided tour option and our guide, Elena, was fantastic. She brought the stones to life with stories of gods and ancient Athenians. So much better than just wandering around on our own.

Hot but incredible!

Wow, what a place. We visited in late May and it was already very hot by 11am with very little shade. My advice: go as early as possible. The views over Athens are spectacular. The combo ticket was great value as we visited the Ancient Agora the next day.

Timeless Beauty

I have dreamed of seeing the Parthenon since I was a child, and it did not disappoint. It is a masterpiece. The booking process was simple and receiving the e-ticket instantly was very convenient. Wear good shoes, the marble is very slippery!

Peaceful Autumn Visit

We visited in October and the weather was perfect, not too hot and not too crowded. Booking a timed-entry ticket was a good idea, it helped manage the flow of people. The Erechtheion with the Caryatids was my favorite part. A truly magical place.

Skip the line is a life saver!

The best money we spent in Athens. The regular line was insane in July. We were inside within 5 minutes. The site is magnificent and you need at least 2-3 hours to see everything without rushing. Highly recommend booking a skip-the-line ticket online.

An Unforgettable Experience

To stand where democracy was born is a feeling I will never forget. The architecture is stunning. It gets very crowded, so be patient when trying to take photos. The website was easy to use for booking.

More than just ruins

The sheer scale and engineering skill is mind-boggling. We added an audio guide which was very helpful for understanding the context of what we were seeing. So much history in one place. Don't miss the views from the viewpoint near the flag.
